In most households the countdown to Christmas is already underway. We’d like to hear your ideas for spending Christmas with the grandchildren – please email them to sophy@goodgranny.com, and we’ll publish the best on Granny's Top Tips. Meanwhile it’s almost time to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in to making the Christmas pud – here is Granny Jane’s quintessential recipe . For some original and inspiring Christmas present ideas for little ones and their grandparents, visit the links on our shopping page , where you can also order a signed copy of Jane’s new book, the Good Granny Companion- see below.

The Good Granny Companion is a compendium of classic card games and other traditional pastimes for indoors and out, stories, rhymes and songs. Chapters include Seasonal Fun (things to do and make at Halloween, Christmas, etc.), Great Days Out in different regions of Britain, recipes for easily prepared food that children really enjoy, and Get With It, Granny , unravelling the mysteries of teenage language and computer jargon. To order the book, click here.

For every book ordered from this website, Jane is donating £1 to her chosen ‘Granny’ charity for 2008-9, Grandmothers United. The Grandmother’s United Campaign is part of the charity African Solutions to African Problems (ASAP), which helps Grannies in South Africa (known there as Gogos) who are caring for their grandchildren in conditions of extreme poverty. To find out more about this very deserving cause go to the ASAP website. Help the Aged also has a scheme where aid goes directly to grandparents in disadvantaged communities around the world.
